The Family: Denver Destroys New Orleans
28 April 2009
Don’t be surprised if you see the Nuggets return to their home court Wednesday night with a little more swagger than usual. After obliterating the Hornets in Game 4, all hands are on deck to finish the job.
What does it take to shut down a team like the Hornets. With their brilliant young floor general picking apart defenses. With the mighty David West slashing and muscling his way to the hoop. And with the former Celtic James Posey showing why he’s got two rings.
It takes relentless intensity, a dedication to team and an acceptance of nothing but victory. Denver hit the floor with a drive that hasn’t been seen in the playoffs in decades. And from the tip-off they executed with a precision that raised the bar in the west and put the top seed Lakers on notice.
With everyone contributing on both ends of the floor, the Nuggets only allowed three Hornets players to reach the low double figures. Blanket defense by Denver caused a franchise playoff-high 27 turnovers leading to 27 points for the Nuggets.
Their do-it-all forward scored a game high 26 points and added seven assists and six rebounds. And their newly acquired hot-shot guard contributed 17 points and 8 assists.
In total, there were seven Nuggets players in double figures. High-flyer J.R. Smith got involved with 12 big points and four dishes. Big Chris Anderson dropped 11 points and protected their territory with two of his patented monster rejections. And their Lithuanian forward Linas Kleiza put up 14 points and pulled 3 rebounds.
In the end everyone contributed to the 121-63 victory, tying for the largest margin of victory in a playoff game in league history.
If Denver plans to make more moves in the west, their bench including Kenyon "K-Mart" Martin and former NY Knick Renaldo Balkman, must continue to contribute in any way they can.
It’s gonna take more than just a superstar to win it all this year. The team game is back and Denver is proving they’ve got a roster to do some damage.
Denver faces New Orleans for what could be the last time Wednesday night at 10:30pm EST.
