Meet Gaby. Gaby is an artist who dreams up his own projects, using cardboard, diet cola and anything else he can get his hands on to make a bold statement. He glues, colors, stitches, paints and mixes his way into an unusual style, reaching out beyond the canvas.
The art he creates represents his outlook on culture, music, art, and icons. So when Lance Armstrong returned to the Tour de France, Gaby took it upon himself to create a tribute piece for Lance and LIVESTRONG. Lance’s strength inspires Gaby, who was confronted with dyslexia at a very young age. Luckily, Gaby kept his hopes high and turned what he initially saw as a weakness into his biggest strength—his amazing creative talent.
Gaby wanted to use his strength to give Lance a motivational push up the last climb of stage 16 at the Tour de France. Tackling closed roads and rainy weather, Gaby finally found the perfect spot for his work. He pulled out his Lance-drawn cardboard stencil, a material Gaby is well known for, and spray-painted Lance’s face across the mountain. Then he waited, covered in paint, to snap a picture the moment Lance went riding over his own are piece.
Aside from his recent LIVESTRONG tribute in support of the fight against cancer, Gaby is currently using his art work in his own fight—one against the stereotypes people like him face every day. A project he’s currently working on, called “Dyslexcity,” is intended to stand up against what others may think about people faced with Gaby’s disability.
