Livestrong and the Lance Armstrong Foundation hit the roads early by kicking off Stages 7 and 8 of the Tour de France with a yellow bang. The “Open Roads” chalking event took to the streets of Barcelona before the race’s start during several cycling activities that took place the weekend before. Chalk boxes were handed out encouraging passersby to draw their own messages of hope on the pavement and cheer cards were given out for people to hold as cyclists passed.
Giant yellow wristbands marked the start and finish lines of the Barcelona race itself, with other inspirational drawings in between. As the Tour de France cyclists continued to the finish line, they couldn’t miss the 453 yellow t-shirts cheering them on. Participants of the Barcelona World Cycling Record sported their dri-fit tees, with their chalk boxes and cheer cards in hand.
Then the cyclists hit the mountain roads of Andorra, shortly after the Livestrong Chalk Bot had painted the road with messages from supporters all over the world. Several Nike football and basketball athletes—JC Navarro, Sergio Busquets, Ricky Rubio, and Gerard Pique—even added their own support to the road with Livestrong chalk drawings.
Several cyclists felt so empowered by the movement that they joined in by wearing yellow on the course. Just a glimpse of this can be seen as the winner of the Stage 8 race lifted his yellow wristband across the finish line.
From everyday people to athletes, everyone in Barcelona, Andorra and everywhere in between came together for more than just a race. They came in support of the Livestrong message and the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
