The Nike+ Human Race – College Edition
One of the more interesting components to The Nike+ Human Race is the concept of creating a team. This feature allows individuals to join a group in order to train together, accomplish certain goals and run as a team on 8.31.2008 in a virtual race using the Nike+ technology. Fifteen Northeast colleges have decided to take on this feat and will be joining the 10,000 New York participants on race day, only they will be completing the race near their respective college at a pre-determined course. These colleges include: Delaware, Connecticut, Syracuse, Rutgers, Columbia, Maryland, Boston, George Washington, Pittsburgh, Lehigh, Brown, Fordham, NYU, Baruch, and Villanova.
In order to prepare for the race, each college will be conducting at least three training runs while gaining participation from student athletes, the Greek communities, and numerous other campus organizations. Most of the training runs, which have started, have been well received.
According the college ambassador from George Washington, Jon Gottlieb, things have been really heating up.
"There is a lot of excitement among the student body. We have so many people already committed and we have only had one training run thus far. I cannot wait to see the final turnout. Our training run went around the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument - both great backdrops while out for a run. One of our teammates is actual going to run in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He is really looking forward to have the chance to compete in one of the 25 cities. It certainly brings a lot of extra excitement to our team, knowing that one of our teammates will be representing George Washington University in Buenos Aires."
At the University of Delaware, college ambassador, Alicia Gentile, notes that they are gearing up for their first training run.
"Our first run will be held next week and we have decided to take the team on a trail run. We have about 100 people signed up with people coming from a variety of social organizations throughout campus. We are still working out the final details on the actual course but we have so many options. This process has been so smooth and a lot of fun that we just can't wait for the actual day."
The participation from these 15 colleges is an amazing contribution to The Nike+ Human Race, and the virtual race component will allow thousands of runners to join in the world's largest race. With a little less than two months to go before race day, our college ambassadors will keep us informed of their progress and overall running experience.
