Music Helps the Runners Go Round
In the world of music, a root-note is referred to as the note that the music is centered on or built on. Well, after spending the past weekend in Central Park, it can be said that the Nike+ system is the building block (i.e. root-note) for runners preparing for the upcoming Nike+ Human Race 10k.

Around every turn, hundreds of runners jogged along with the staple white earphones, moving to the rhythm of their selected musical choice. Even more revealing was how many individuals continually reached toward their iPods to check their current status. After witnessing a group of runners pass by for a second loop around the reservoir, I noticed each listening to music, and my curiosity took over. I joined the group for an easy loop and was amazed to see that each runner had the Nike+ system and was actively using it throughout their run.

After finishing their final loop, each runner began to calculate his or her respective time, pace and distance. While talking was limited during the run, the runners certainly had a lot to say about their completed mileage and overall experience.

“Listening to music while I run helps me get through the longer distances. Ever since I purchased an iPod, I no longer have an excuse not to run.” – Susan, recreational runner

“I just purchased the Nike+ system and I am in love with it. The power-song feature is my favorite. I keep hitting that center button every time I feel a little tired or when I have the desire to stop.” – John, running for the past 15 years

“I do not remember a time that I ran without music. I use to carry around a portable CD player before the iPod. Music plays such a large role in my life and it is the reason I got changed this morning and met up with my friends for a run.” – Joanna, participating in The Nike+ Human Race 10k

These three runners are a small sample of the hundreds of runners each day that throw on some music and head off to Central Park for a run. Music is used as a motivational tool; it allows an individual to gain inspiration and focus. With The Nike+ Human Race 10k coming up, the staple white earphones and music devices will surely be dominating around the running routes around New York City.
