Blake Hazard of The Submarines sings National Anthem

Blake Hazard and John Dragonetti are the husband and wife duo that comprise The Submarines. You would have thought after The Beatles' "Yellow Submarine" that people would have been all over it. But this polished LA-pop group has the indie formula down cold: an attractive duo with a crazy/weird love backstory. Blake (a girl!) and John (a boy!) used to date, then broke up, then wrote songs about one another, and are now married. Their committed relationship has produced two critically lauded albums, Declare a New State! and now Honeysuckle Weeks, and they fit in the mold that you would them to—as the natural progeny of Mates of State and Viva Voce, here's to power couples.
Hazard will be singing the National Anthem at the Nike+ Human Race 10K in Los Angeles, the finish city for the Nike+ Human Race, the world's biggest one-day running event taking place on August 31, 2008. The race brings together the power of sport and music to inspire and connect runners from every corner of the planet. Participants in this unprecedented event will experience an exclusive music performance by some of today's top artists in each of the 25 designated race cities. In Los Angeles, nine-time Grammy Award winning artist Kanye West will headline the run's post race concert for the grand finale of the 25-city Nike+ Human Race. Runners will take to the streets passing the city's most famous landmarks before ending at the LA Coliseum to see West take the stage.
Hazard is an avid runner, and this spring ran her first marathon, in Los Angeles. When on tour, Hazard run most mornings for 40 to 50 minutes and then naps in the van en route to her next show. Sometimes it's tricky for her to find good outdoor routes in unfamiliar places, but Hazard says it's such an amazing way to get to see a city we might otherwise only pass through in the dark. "When we're home, I run a hilly ten kilometer loop three to four days a week, which I usually extend into a 10 mile run on the weekend. My loop winds around the serene Arroyo Seco, and over the historic Colorado Street bridge to Pasadena. Coming back to the same route over time has been great as I've been able to mark my progress (better endurance) and see where I need work (speed!)."

Hazard has been tracking her runs with Nike+. "I really look forward to surpassing my summer goal of 200 miles on my run later today. Next goal: 500 miles! I'm currently reading Haruki Murakami's fantastic book, "What I Talk About When I Talk About Running," and highly recommend it", says Hazard.
