Kris on Harbour Island
Ever tried to run six miles on an island that is only 2 miles long? Harbour Island near North Eluthera in the Bahamas is just such an island. It’s where I first tested the Nike+ with my shiny new iPod Nano, and where I signed up for the Human Race. I wanted to keep track of my daily runs, but I also wanted to start tracking what my pace was in order to get a read on how I might do in a 10K.
This was the, “get back in shape,” vacation. Now I must say, I’ve promised myself many times that if I ever took some time off, I would run every day. Oddly enough, this was the first time I ever actually did it , and the Nike+ had something to do with
that. I found that tracking my runs, uploading them to the site, and trying to see how I was doing, just became part of my daily routine. It was a bit of a competitive element, but more so than that, it was a daily reminder of that voice in the back of my head that I had found it so easy to ignore in the past.
So, every day, I got up, strapped on my Nano with the Nike+ attached, and went for a run. From the north end of the island where there is a beautiful cut where the fishing boats and diving boats go in and out every day to the other end where all the huge houses are along a two track sand an coral path. Not much in the way of hills or challenging terrain, but what a beautiful place to run. I’ll go back next year, and see if I can run 10 miles on the 2-mile island without the locals on the island thinking I’m completely nuts. I won’t be bored though. I’ll be checking my pace and distance, and hoping Lance Armstrong or Tiger Woods will come on after my run and congratulate me on passing another milestone.
Gotta keep running…. J
