Nathan Singleton Live at Guero's Aug. 19
Runners are running out of time (how clever am I?). Only a few more training sessions are left before the Nike+ Human Race takes place on August 31st. Just don’t expect Nathan Singleton to be among the masses of headbands, short shorts and Nikes. “I ran cross country in high school to fulfill my athletic credit,” Singleton laughs, “I’m not running unless I have to.” That’s ok… he’s been on the move and on the road this summer touring for their new album, Itinerant Youth. Known now as The Sideshow Tragedy, the unsigned trio has a complex mixture of sounds, that at first listen doesn’t sound like it works, but it does.
Singleton, lead singer of The Sideshow Tragedy, grew up listening to old acoustic blues in East Texas before moving on to rock and punk. His move to Austin dropped him in the punk scene, but the blues weren’t that far off. “The Sideshow Tragedy’s song structure is in country and blues, but it’s played with total abandon,” explains Singleton “it’s definitely punk.” I told you it didn’t sound possible, but it really is quite a sound. And their new album, Itinerant Youth, is perfect for those runners needing some motivation. As Singleton puts it, “it’s all about traveling; it’s really about movement.” So take the album with you, because you know Singleton won’t be there pounding the pavement on August 31st .
Remember, all of the great bands performing at Guero’s on Tuesday’s are leading up to the final act on 8.31.08, featuring rock icon, Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals.
