AUSTIN RUNNER ON NIKE+ TECHNOLOGY FOR THE NIKE+ HUMAN RACE IN AUSTIN

One could assume the more technology we create the lazier we become. The reason why someone could assume that (and we know what happens when you assume) is because technology makes tasks we do more comfortable, better and just plain easier.

Last Thursday, I walked up to Lance Armstrong’s bar, SIX Lounge, around 6:45 p.m. There was definitely some energy in the air that got me ready to run. It was obvious everyone at the Nike Club Run Texas training series, a group of over 100 runners, were as excited as I was to hit the streets.

The group that meets each week at SIX is not only training for their own heath’s sake, but they are also contributing towards a global effort to benefit people’s health around the world. By running in the Nike+ Human Race, you are helping three charitable organizations: Lance Armstrong Foundation, World Wildlife Fund and NineMillion.org. The race should be a great event for anyone to experience and I’m happy to be able to contribute to the cause through my training and running of the race.

As an art director for two local fitness publications in Austin, Austin Fit Magazine and Austin Runner , I’ve always been interested in the latest training and running technology. At SIX on Thursday, there were many Nike representatives available to help me sign-up for the Nike Club Run Texas series or to try on the latest Nike training shoes. This is all done by setting up a personal account via the computers they have on-site. After you’ve picked out the shoes you wanted to trial, you can run in them during the training run and upon your return give them your feedback. Did the shoe have enough cushion? Was it too narrow? Did the shoe breathe well? These are some of the questions that are asked. After you’ve given your feedback, the Nike representatives will be able to match your foot and desired running comfort to any Nike shoe right there. Pretty neat!

Well it seems like everyone is interested in music and cell phone technology these days. Austin is a very tech-savvy city and whenever I turn the corner, I get to see some of the most recent technology to hit the stores, like the newest iPod nano. How do they get that tiny thing to play videos? What’s great about Nike is that they’ve combined technologies to make a product that can help your training become more productive.

Let’s say you try on the Nike Zoom Victory shoe and you love it. You can’t go home without it. With your new shoes, you can take advantage of the Nike+ running system by placing the Nike+ sensor into a prefabricated slot in your shoe.

There are two ways you set this up: 1) Buy the Nike+ SportBand or 2) Buy the SportKit adapter for your iPod nano. Both versions (SportBand or SportKit for your iPod) will tell you your time, pace, distance and calories burned. With the iPod version, you have the option of hearing a female or male voice tell you all your stats. I think I’ll stick with the female voice :). I can’t imagine how scared I’d be hearing a man’s voice as I run, ha-ha.

After your run, you can store your data by using the USB plug-in or by docking the iPod to sync to your nikeplus.com account. It is a very cool integrated technology and I hope it’ll continue to get better by using my Nike+ SportBand to train.

If you’re wondering how the run was, it was great! No too hot and there was plenty of FREE Gatorade, water and all types of sandwiches to consume following my run. So I plan on seeing you out at SIX Lounge this week on Thursday, August 7 at 7 p.m.

In my next blog post, I will help you create your own workout regimen, goals and challenges through nikeplus.com. After all, Nike wants to help you keep your personal health in check.

Don’t forget to register for the Nike+ Human Race. Just Do It for a cause. nikeplus
