Nike+ Human Race Austin : July 2008

Anyone who knows anything about Lance Armstrong is most likely familiar with his outstanding involvement in advancing cancer research, awareness and treatment. A cancer survivor himself, Lance created the Lance Armstrong Foundation as a vehicle for cancer fundraising and research.

Most people also know that Lance is proudly from the always weird and wonderful, Austin, TX.

When Nike announced that it would bring together one million people on the same day for a charitable race, and that it would be in only four U.S. cities, Livestrong seemed a perfect fit, and Austin a perfect host city. The Livestrong Foundation is one of the three global charities Nike+ Human Race 10K participants can donate their registration fees to, and as an added bonus, the lucky folks in Austin will also have Lance running right alongside them on 8.31.2008 - or far out in front of them...

"The Lance Armstrong Foundation is proud to be selected as one of the global charities that will benefit from the Nike+ Human Race 10K and the generosity of runners around the world," said Doug Ulman, President and CEO of the Lance Armstrong Foundation. "Partnering with Nike for this one-of-a-kind international race will unite survivors and raise awareness in the global fight against cancer."

Not only is the Lance Armstrong Foundation thrilled to be a proud partner of the global event, but Lance Armstrong's personal excitement about the Nike+ Human Race 10K and Austin, Texas were evident when asked about his thoughts on the race.

"I think it's amazing. Anytime you try to put 1 million people on a road on a single day for one event, it's clearly a monumental undertaking. It's something that only Nike could do and will inspire people to get out, train for something, and participate in something. And also give back to great causes," said Armstrong.

Lance is thrilled to be playing such an active role in the Nike+ Human Race 10K, and says "This is big for me personally. I grew up in Texas and I still call Texas my home state and Austin my hometown," said Armstrong. "We have a lot of different people getting fit in Austin. In general, Texas is a big running state. If you consider the running community here, Austin, as well as in Houston and Dallas, we have a lot of consistent runners. So, for all Texans to get together and participate in the Nike+ Human Race 10K is cool, and they're participating with runners from all over the world."

And to all of you Texans out there, Lance says, "No excuses. There are 25 locations in cities around the world, and the ability to run where you are with the Nike+ system. No one has any excuse, they can either do it in person, or do it line...they should just do it. I would say to my friends, no pressure, but you have no excuse." There are training runs in Austin and training tools on NikePlus, but it's all a balance. Armstrong said, "The best exercise protocol is balance, obviously. We have things we endorse, some people like to drink cold beers, or eat vegetables, or do other things, but the key is balance."

Lance is even more excited about Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals post race performance. "Ben is one of my best buds, so it will be great to enjoy. I've notified him about the heat in Austin on 8.31.2008, but Ben's a great man. He is someone committed to exercise, committed to the outdoors, and he loves to be outside and stay fit; it's music to him. He's one of those artists who, if you were on an island, and your iPod would only play one artist for the rest of your life, I would pick him."

Register for the race today to run with Lance in his hometown.

We'll see you Saturday mornings at Starbucks, Tuesday evenings at Guero's, and Thursday evenings at SIX!

Shiner, TX

Posted by obela Jul 31, 2008

No, your beer goggles aren’t misleading you. Yes, it’s a beer AND a city. Check this out:

Only 55 people brew Shiner beer at the Spoetzl Brewery in Shiner, Texas (pop. 2,070). Maybe that’s because only 55 folks are capable of carrying out the rigorous handcraft brewing process Shiner, TX insists upon. Most breweries spill more beer in a year than they make. Then again, some beers are worth spilling.

Since 1909, the “Little Brewery” has been brewing distinctive beers using traditional old-world methods and recipes. The brewmaster uses small-batch techniques and the finest ingredients to create beers big breweries can’t duplicate. They’re proud to be the oldest independent brewery in Texas and a leader in today’s specialty beer market. Like any true Texan, they are not accustomed to following.

Visit the brewery and help celebrate 99 years of brewing Shiner beers. Tours are available in which patrons can sample a variety of Shiner, TX brews: Bock, Blonde, Hefeweizen, Light, Bohemian Black Lager, Shiner 99, or the brand new summer seasonal, Spezial Leicht.

Visit them at www.shiner.com for more info.

Prosit!

Austin's Favorite BBQ

Posted by obela Jul 31, 2008

Everyone knows that Salt Lick BBQ is Austin’s favorite BBQ. We thought you should know why:

The Roberts family began serving delicious Salt Lick barbeque in Driftwood, Texas over 40 years ago. They always choose the freshest and finest meats and ingredients, cook them slowly with the utmost attention, and serve them up with Hill Country friendliness.

They are honored to be a part of this event and will have a booth set up at the finish line for those who wish to reward themselves for a job well done by indulging in a true taste of Texas -- Salt Lick barbeque!

Visit them at saltlickbbq.com for more information on their original location in Driftwood, TX or their new location, opening soon in Round Rock. Private venues are available at the Driftwood location or they can provide off-site catering for your special event to just about anywhere.

See you at the race!

After releasing two EPs in Los Angeles, songwriter and astronaut Paul Waclawsky left the haze for the heat of Austin, TX where he promptly joined the Cassini spacecraft team and blasted of from Earth destined for Saturn. There he found a new line up and new inspirations in the form of Jaylinn Davidson and Jake Mitchell. Jaylinn was there researching the magnetometer's detection of the presence of ion cyclotron waves in the vicinity of Saturn's moon Enceladus (which just so happens to sound like a Moog synth when played back) and Jake was far out there floating in space collecting data on the rhythm of Saturn's rings.
Once their mission was complete, they returned to Texas with everything they collected in space (synths, samplings, and old records that were found floating around Titan), and turned it all into Music. Jaylinn's Moog bass and leads connect with Jake's explosive evolving rhythms to form a hybrid rhythm section. It's definitely psychedelic, but not in the traditional sense. Part organic. Part electronic. Part outer space. Joined again by Grammy-Nominated Producer Tim Gerron, The Boxing Lesson crafted Wild Streaks & Windy Days in 2007 and played a meteor shower of shows at home and on the moon.

Brendan Hansen Comes to Austin

Posted by obela Jul 21, 2008

In case you haven't heard, U.S. Olympian and former Longhorn swimmer, Brendan Hansen, will be hitting the streets of Austin on 8.31.2008 to participate in the Nike+ Human Race 10K with the rest of the city.

Recently, I had a chance to discuss with Brendan his Game experience, his thoughts on the Nike+ Human Race 10K and his personal insights on training for a road race.

Brendan, currently training for the 2008 Games in Beijing, remembers how he felt during his first Games experience. "The most common mistake is letting the pressure get to you," Brendan said. "Sometimes our emotions take over our race strategy, but the key is to step outside of your race and swim...you're a young rookie coming in to perform and you freeze from the pressure. I always say that experience is what you get when you didn't get what you want."

Now, with one Games under his belt, Brendan has a fresh outlook for China. "The first time I went I was a rookie. I was very nervous and just wanted to get it over with," Brendan remembers. "This time I want to take it all in, enjoy myself and come home knowing I had the ultimate experience."

In true all-star style, Brendan will continue a workout regimen even after the Games to train for the Nike+ Human Race 10K in Austin. Even though "my time is limited because of my Games schedule, I plan to use the Nike+ system and train with the nikeplus.com coaching tool." Brendan likes the system because "you can check out your pace, time, distance and calories burned for each run."

When asked how he felt about running in the race with Lance Armstrong, Brendan said, "It will be cool to see him run by me since I'm sure he's gong to beat all of us." Whether you're running to try and beat Lance's time or simply to get in shape, this race is a great opportunity for Texas runners because "you're running for a purpose in an event unlike anything you've ever done," Brendan said. "This is the first global race to reach such a large participant base and geographic scope." And, in Austin "Ben Harper is performing and Lance is running...so I'm looking forward to that." For only $35 dollars, I'm sure most of Austin is looking forward to it as well.

So, to make sure you don't miss the opportunity to run alongside Brendan and Lance and see Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals for free. Register for the race today!

Join the Nike+ Human Race TX Team

Posted by obela Jul 14, 2008

During your runs at Lady Bird Lake, along the trails of the Barton Creek Greenbelt or on the track at UT's campus, have you ever run by or around one of your fellow Austin runners, and thought:

"Hey, I wonder if they're training for a race." - or -

"How do they train?" - or -

"She looks friendly, I wonder if she'd be a fun running partner."

I know these thoughts have crossed my mind, but, even in the "weird" city of Austin, I've never mustered up enough courage to actually ask. I'm too afraid of being perceived as...well...weird.

So, if you're like me, you'll love the new Austin Human Racer team on nikeplus.com. This online team will help you to easily connect with the many Austinites training for the Nike+ Human Race 10K in an online setting where you won't feel "weird."

As a member, you can surf the team site to get the scoop on other runners, chat with fellow Austin racers to bond over things like your love for Lady Bird Lake or to pick training run start points like the Stevie Ray Vaughan statue.

You could even meet a potential Nike+ challenger. to motivate yourself with some friendly competition, or check out how your training compares to other Austin runners.

Compete to appear on the team leaderboard in distance, duration, fastest 5K and/or fastest 10K. Train hard, and, who knows, maybe you'll be the one to leave the most footprints on the hike & bike trail.

For an awesome, super-interactive way to stay connected with local runners, become an Austin Human Racer and get pumped for 8.31.08. The entire city of Austin will be cheering you on!

The better question, really, is why wouldn’t you be training for the Nike+ Human Race? I attended the p-2547 this past Saturday, taking it upon myself to jump into a training routine, and in doing so, realized there is no reason NOT to be doing this!

My Saturday morning started out a little early, but not bad, with a 7:45 a.m. arrival at the Starbucks at W 24th Street and Nueces. As I walked onto the Starbucks porch, there was a table of t-shirts, registration sheets, maps, and a whole plethora of Nike and Nike Human Race items. I joined the group of people who were there, excited and ready to get their training under way. We were then given the option to follow one of three different coaches: the first coach was headed out on a 5 mile run through west Austin, the other was leading a group of 3 mile runners, and the third was taking charge of some serious speed-walkers who were ready to hit the road.

I chose the 3 mile group, and after 3.5 miles and some serious sweating, we were back on the porch, where ice cold water, Starbucks coffee and free Nike Dry Fit t-shirts awaited us. If you don’t like free stuff, this is not your kind of training group! We all took time to hydrate, then first time training attendees like myself were given a $5 Starbucks gift card. I immediately went inside to redeem my tasty prize. Next came a raffle drawing for a product give-away, and third came a Starbucks punch card. This was a great way to kick off my Saturday, and there is nothing to get me motivated like some free stuff!

I also spent some time chatting with the other training run participants, so I thought I’d share what I learned about these Austinites who, just like you, are training for the Nike+ Human Race 10K.

Sim Ngo: She is a serious runner. She has been running for about 10 years, and just this year, she qualified to participate in the Boston Marathon. Wow! Running the Nike+ Human Race has a little bit of different taste for Sim, but she is running this 10K because of the outstanding change of perspective. She is not approaching this as a competitive race, though she’s sure to blast many folks out the water. Rather, she felt like the whole vibe surrounding this race was to be a part of something bigger than herself, and bigger than any one race. She is running this race to be a part of the Human Race, and join with 1 million other runners across the globe.

Philip Chang: Let me say that when I first asked Philip why he was training for the Human Race, he said “I’m not,” but after explaining exactly what the Human Race entails, he couldn’t turn down such an awesome event, and his mind was changed. He is now registered for the race and plans to continue to train with other Austinites to be a part of this incredible day. Philip is an athlete by nature – he’s a cyclist, a soccer player, and a runner. So, when I asked him “what changed your mind”? he had an awesome, one-word response. “Community.” He wanted to be a part of a global community, and once he looked around, thought it was incredible to see how the run was bringing folks together right in his own city. He met 15 other strangers on Saturday morning, all of whom are pushing for the same thing, to run the Nike+ Human Race on 8.31.2008.

Jennifer Simar: Jennifer was chipper at 8:00 a.m., so she immediately caught my attention. After running the 3.5 mile training run with her, I asked her why she was out there doing this, and she answered as a girl after my own heart, “I love Starbucks!” Okay, that’s not her primary reason, but it helps. She’s been running for several years and loves doing it. She had never been a part of a training group before, and when she heard Austin was chosen as one of the 25 cities for the Nike+ Human Race, her interest peaked. She will be just one of the many friendly faces you’ll see on Saturday mornings at Starbucks.

So, on Saturday morning when the weather is beautiful, and you’re wandering around your house looking for a hot cup of coffee, why not reach for your running shoes and meet me at Starbucks at 8:00a? I know you won’t regret it…

See you Saturday!
