Calling all Beginners

Posted by michelle.woo Jun 26, 2008

Hey Austin! Are you hesitating to sign up for the Nike+ Human Race because you are not a runner and you’re thinking, “I’ve never run a 5K race? How can I run a 10K race?”

Well, we’ve got some tips for you from the running experts in town. Check out the 5K/10K training program from Austin’s own Paul Carrozza, co-founder of locally owned and operated, RunTex. You can walk your way to a fit 5K and once you’ve done that, you can up the ante to a 10K. You can get your body ready for a 5K or 10K with just a little determination, and incorporating fun activities into your trainings, like this weekend’s Keep Austin Weird 5k, is a good way to get motivated.

The Keep Austin Weird 5K is a run or walk and if you’re ready, it would be a great way to break into training mode. While you’re out there participating or if you’re just planning to attend the festival, make sure to keep your eyes out for the Nike+ Mobile Unit to get more information on the Human Race and the Nike+ system.

We know how intimidating starting a training program can be, especially when we are pushing triple digit heat here in Austin. But with the right training program, this is something you can do and you can feel great about doing it.

If you’re wondering where you can train, we’ve got a great suggestion for you. We are huge fans of Austin’s Lady Bird Lake Trail, as we used the trail to train together for Austin’s Capital 10K this year. Lady Bird Lake, also known as Town Lake, is a great place to get ready for any running event and it’s free. No expensive membership required and the trail presents several training options. There are perfect pieces of trail for your 5K training, which is a 3.1 mile run, or your 10K training, which is a 6.2 mile run. Shoot for the moon and defeat them both with the training tips we’ve included below.

Whether you want to walk, run or get a 5K under your belt, these tips will help you be ready to run with the world at the big race on 8.31.08.

• With your Nike+ system, SportBand or iPod Nano, Nike can guide you through a walk to run program geared especially towards those of us who are emerging runners.
• As mentioned above, RunTex also has a great ten week walking program to get you moving!

Or, if running is what you’re aiming for, Nike’s Coach Jay would be happy to provide you with your very own 10K training program – just ask him!

Okay, now you’ve got the recipe for running right in front of you, so there’s no more excuses – get out there and Just Do It!

The Power of One (Million)

Posted by ECS822 Jun 18, 2008

On 8.31.08, Nike is bringing together One Million athletes for a worldwide event unlike any other. In the U.S., Austin is one of only four cities that will host the Nike+ Human Race. Texans will have the opportunity to show the world what they’re made of. Look out world.

It’s not about whether you run fast or slow, everyday or every so often. This race is about something bigger. The Nike+ Human Race is about people all over the globe coming together to support important causes and have fun doing it. The runners that take to the streets on 8.31.08 will be part of one united global community.

On race day here in Austin, runners will gather at 6:30 p.m., and wind through a course, which includes the Texas State Capitol, Austin Museum of Art, City Hall, the Warehouse District, University of Texas, The Drag, Bob Bullock Texas State History museum, the Red River District and Sixth Street. Runners will include top Nike athletes such as seven-time Tour de France champion and Austin local, Lance Armstrong.

Austinite Benson Kelsey will be one of those athletes running on 8.31.08, and all he needed was a little external motivation. “I run with my dog every day, but I have always wanted to run a race,” said Kelsey. “This was the motivation I needed. I want to run for charity, and I want to do it on a momentous day where people all over the world, many of whom are probably running their first 10k, will be out there with me.”

So, where will you be on 8.31.08? Will you be one in a million?

Just do it.
