Ben Pulham
He is a professional triathlete hailing from New Zealand. He has been racing all over the world and is ranked as high as 53 in the world. However, due to some health concerns he is calling an end to his professional career to focus on setting up my new business. Racers' toolbox is a coaching company that specializes in helping athletes of any ability in Singapore achieve their goals in endurance sport. Check them out at http://www.racers-toolbox.com/

My PB for 10km: 30.30 minutes.

This PB was achieved in which race?
A track race many years ago in New Zealand

What time of the day do you usually train?
I usually train early morning (swimming) late morning (biking) and run in the afternoon.

List fav running routes and why?
My favourite routes are in trails in Europe. I love the hills and the tranquility of being out there in nature. In Singapore my favourite run is in the botanical gardens because it is the only place where I can run consistent hills.

What's in your water bottle during a run?
I race with coke.

What motivates you on to get up early in the morning or miss out on doing things your peers would normally do?
My goals motivate me to get out of bed. A lot of people have sacrificed a lot for me to get to where I am and do what I do and I use this as a reminder to help motivate me when I am struggling.

What goes on inside your mind when the pain starts kicking in?
I try to focus on the process. If I am thinking about what I am supposed to be doing in order to keep moving forward, I am not thinking about the pain. Relax your shoulders, smooth stride, pick your knees up.

Any tips for beginners taking part in the 10km race ?
Enjoy the experience and focus on one step at a time. When you break the race down into parts it will not be so daunting. You will be surprised at what you can achieve if you just have a go.

More tips to take one's performance to the next level?
A common mistake I witness with athletes in Singapore is they believe that speed training will make them better. While this is true to a point, most Singaporeans would get a lot more out of doing strength endurance work. Get out and run up and down a hill for a while. Get strong first and then lay down the speed. Most athletes are fast enough to run the time they want to, they are just not strong enough to keep the pace up.

Why endurance sports?
It is a lifestyle. I love the challenge, the people and the travel. There is no better feeling than setting a goal, making a plan and achieving your goal. It is for me, the ultimate high.

How old do you think you will be doing this until? And why?
I will do it for as long as it is fun for me. You have to do things that make you happy.
