Breakfast of Champions
It’s Saturday, and we’re less than 24 hours from participating in the first-ever global 10K. So intense! Anybody else stoked about making Organized Running Event history?

But because changing history is hungry work (and…uh…so is running for 10,000 metres), I’ve included, below, an embarrassing-but-true list of the items I traditionally consume, for maximum performance, on the day of a race. Feel free to emulate it!

Upon waking:
1 banana, preferably just yellow
1 mini-cup of espresso

A short while later:
2 slices multigrain toast
1 poached egg

Before I leave the house:
Something like 15 mugs of water
2 extra-strength Ibuprofins

Minutes before the race:
Somewhere in the neighbourhood of 10 Super Nibs

I know, I know – Super Nibs aren’t even considered a proper foodstuff! I may as well be drinking a carton of liquid invert sugar, right?

But, see, it’s a tradition. I’ve done the Nibs thing ever since one of my very first races.

It was an out-of-towner when I was in grade 10 - me and a bunch of friends from our school’s triathlon team stopped at a Shopper’s Drug Mart before the race to get band-aids for blister-y toes, and we came across a sale bin of Super Nibs packs.

I mean, $1.99 for a movie-theatre sized portion? Ain’t no 15-year-old turning that down!

We thought it’d be hilarious to have a Nibs-eating competition before the race, and it was.

I had a great run that day, and the Nibs-at-race-day-breakfast thing became a bit of a superstitious tradition for me.

So if you’re up at the Nike Runner's Lounge in Toronto tomorrow and you see a guy chewing on strands of cherry licorice, feel free to say hi and ask for one (or point and grimace). Either way, hope you have a good run!
