Running Retreat
It’s safe to say that I am a running princess. So when my 100km/week friend asked me to spend the weekend hitting the trails at Whistler I should have known that our definitions of “running retreat” would differ. Below are his Whistler “must do’s” followed by mine…notice a difference?
EAT AT:
Him: Brunch on the go…pack an organic feast and picnic in the sun at Green Lake.
Me: Brunch for the Gods…go directly to Araxi for balsamic figs, perfectly poached eggs and mimosas of course.
PLAY AT:
Him: Hike up your...life. Drive to Joffre Lake Park for three lakes in three hours. Did I mention the three breathtaking views?
Me: Ride to the top…take the gondola (an escalator for the active) to the top of Whistler. Soak up the sun and the amazing wildflowers. Bear watch the afternoon away.
RECOVER WITH:
Him: Get lost and found…after a hot day go for a late night dip at Lost Lake.
Me: Rock and roll…hot stone massage therapy at the Four Seasons Spa will roll out all the stress.
What DID we agree upon?
• Throwing our training diets down the drain to enjoy some guilt-free carb-loading. An active weekend at Whistler includes a mandatory visit to the Rim Rock Café. One word…mmmmmmm.
• Exploring the 30km of paved trails and countless kilometers of off-the-beaten-tracks. Whistler’s Valley Trail winds through the mountains and provides a paradise for runners, walkers and everyone in between.
• Spending a night or five at the gorgeous Nita Lake Lodge. Just enough boutique for me and just enough lakefront for him. Snuggle up to the definition of Whistler luxury.
