Five reasons to volunteer for the Human Race
Unless you're blind, you should be beginning to see signs of the Human Race all over Vancouver--and even if you are, you're likely hearing about it.
As I browse running magazines and newspapers, I continue to come across articles; the bus shelters here are plastered; I've even heard people chatting about it at my local coffee shop... and with good reason! This is going to be the largest single-day running event in ALL OF HISTORY. A lofty goal, to be sure. One million souls running within the space of 24 hours.
My social group is all abuzz, and I'm delighted to report that many of my friends will be running with me. However, a few of my friends either don't run, or are injured, but still want to get involved.
I've recommended that they volunteer.
I don't know how many of you have been to a running race, but it's a magical environment, a mix of human achievement and tremendous human kindness on the part of the volunteers. Positivity from the sidelines helps the runners to no end. As a volunteer, you oil the machine whilst developing a tremendous case of the warm fuzzies and good karma in spades. It's a win-win situation.
If you're interested in giving volunteering a whirl, the Nike+ Human Race might be a particularly awesome place to do so. Here are five reasons to consider it:
1) Make history
You'll participate in a world-record-breaking event that will go down in the annals of history. One day, the grandchildren will be amazed.
2) Hear music
You won't find bands like Theory of a Dead Man, and The Trews at your typical running race. It's basically like getting concert tickets for free.
3) Score gear
Apparently, volunteers all get a free running outfit, including shoes, shorts, shirt and socks. I haven't verified this %100, so don't quote me on it, but if it's true, definitely worth looking into!
4) Happiness
Celebrate human potential, meet new people, and enjoy being a positive force in the world.
5) Double happiness
It's a fundraiser. You'll be helping raise 3 million
dollars for three awesome organizations: The Lance Armstrong
Foundation, World Wildlife Fund and the nine millions.org campaign, a United Nations
initiative bringing recreation to refugee kids.
