Black History Month: Spoken Word Showdown
March 25 2009
High schoolers in Atlanta, Miami and Houston put their talent on full display at the end of February in celebration of Black History Month. The challenge- create a piece of poetry based on a Gamechanger who has had an impact on their lives or the African American community. The result- moving... reflective... challenging... inspirational... and an extremely hard job for the judges in each city.
Luckily, a lot of the judges have experiences in high pressure situations. In Miami NBA legend, Alonzo Mourning helped the judging panel keep their cool. In Atlanta, Olympic Gold Medalist Angelo Taylor and Falcon players Curtis Lofton and Jamaal Anderson joined hip hop artist Ashely Phillips and 2 others in the difficult decision. And in Houston Amobe Okoye of the Houston Texans and hip hop artist Bun B teamed up with a few local faces to come to a final ruling.
In addition to high-fives, the thrill of hundreds cheering for you and the personal satisfaction of a job well done, winners walked away with a $1,000 scholarship and a pair of limited Nike Air Force Ones- 2009 Black History Month Edition. Not too shabby.
