Jackie Robinson Foundation
March 11 2009
To say Jackie Robinson is a Gamechanger is stating the obvious. His legacy is seen every April through October on the baseball diamond in the likes of Ken Griffey, Jr and Derek Jeter just to name a few.
But Robinson's legacy continues off the diamond as well through the Jackie Robinson Foundation(JRF). Founded by Robinson's wife, Rachel, to serve as an advocate for youth with the greatest need, JRF grants four year college scholarships to minority youth.
And like Robinson's impact was much deeper than baseball, the foundation's impact is much deeper than a scholarship. JRF provides an extensive mentoring program that includes attendance at workshops, assignment of a peer and a professional mentor and placement into summer internships and permanent employment.
A group of JRF scholars will be together this weekend in NYC for one of these workshops. As part of the weekend, Youth Venture will introduce a challenge to the scholars to launch teams that use sport as a means to create social or environmental change. Nike will fund 5 of these teams to make their ideas to reality.
Stay tuned for more on the weekend's events and the projects that come out of it. And check out Youth Venture for support in starting your own project.
